When I was discharged from the Navy at the tail end of the Vietnam war I was going into sales.
Four years of thinking on active duty, paired with Dad’s constant encouragement had me convinced to enter the
highest paid profession in America. I leapt into the American dream
I have shared the convention stages of the world with the likes of Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, and a whole host of rich and famous personalities. We were listed in the Who’s Who of successful business leaders. I remember giving a speech in the Charlotte Coliseum to a little audience of almost 30,000 people. It would be the only speech my parents would ever hear me give. I had the privilege and challenge of following former president Ronald Reagan to the podium. I figured half the audience would leave for a potty break, but to my surprise they didn’t. Yet, in the back of my mind lingered and old and worn out dream. To be a writer. The answer was clear.
Life is a process. We go through stages of learning, unlearning, and relearning that move us
steadily toward that which has been in our hearts all the days of our years. We must answer that call or die lamenting the frustration. I started with a newspaper column. I used the tongue-in-cheek name, "Ask Boomer Al." You know what? It worked. They started asking. One question in that column led to my first book.
